       COMPOSITION MEASUREMENT

What is body composition*?

The definition of body composition is 'the percentages of bone, fat, water and muscle in human bodies'. All these factors can be measured.

Why monitor body composition?

Body composition monitors are designed for healthier living by giving you an insight into key health indicators that will enable you to monitor the impact of changes to your lifestyle:

•See the impact of a change in diet on the body to make sure you are dieting the healthy way

• Fine-tune your fitness programme by monitoring progress of muscle mass and Basal Metabolic Rate

• Monitor the level of visceral fat, which has been linked as a possible risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes and/or heart disease.

• Set a target for your physique and monitor your progress towards it.

TANITA BC - 1000 is a body analyzer that can show you all these measurements. It brings you fast, accurate body composition results using the latest advanced bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) technology developed by Tanita over the last 25 years.Safe, low-level electrical signals are passed through the body via the patented Tanita footpads on the monitor platform. It is easy for
the signal to flow through fluids in the muscle and other body tissues but meets resistance as it passes through body fat , as it contains little fluid. This resistance is called impedance. The impedance readings are then entered into medically researched mathematical formulas to calculate your body composition. This body analysis scale give you a true indicator of your inner health and, when monitored over time, can show the impact of any fitness regime or weight loss program.

What you need to know:

Your body is mainly composed of muscle, fat and water. When you exercise more or start dieting, your body composition will change, even if your weight stays the same. This is why:

  1. As you exercise more, you develop more muscle mass and reduce fat. Your weight might even increase at a certain point, as your muscle mass increases.

  2. Very low calorie diets may force your body into 'starvation' mode. Storing body fat rather then burning it. So even if you lose weight, your fat ratio will increase.

  3. Quick-fix, crash dietes may produce speedy results, but the weight loss will be in the form of body water and healthy, lean muscle tissue.

Parameters of Body Composition Measurement:

  1. Body Fat Percentage is the proportion of fat to the total body weight.

  2. Body Fat Mass is the actual weight of fat in your body.

  3. Visceral Fat is located deep in the core abdominal area, surrounding and protecting the vital organs.

  4. Muscle Mass: Includes the skeletal muscles, smooth muscles such as cardiac and digestive muscles and the water contained in these muscles. Muscles act as an engine in consuming energy .As your muscle mass increases, the rate at which you burn energy (calories) increases which accelerates your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and helps you reduce excess body fat levels and lose weight in a healthy way.

  5. Total Body Water is the total amount of fluid in the body expressed as a percentage of total weight.

  6. Physique Rating-assesses muscle and body fat levels and rates the result as one of nine body types.

  7. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the the daily minimum level of energy or calories your body requires when at rest (including sleeping) in order to function effectively.

  8. Metabolic Age-compares your BMR to an average for your age group.

  9. Body Mass Index-  a standardised ratio of weight to height, used as a general indicator of health. Your BMI can be calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by the square of your height (in meters).

  10. DCI – Daily Calory Intake- an estimate of how many calories you can consume within the next 24 hours to maintain your current weight.
